Ian Hall from Wilds of Wanney tells us about the latest edition of The Cheviot
The latest edition of The Cheviot includes an article by local author and poet, Katrina Porteous. Titled “Can She Bait a Line?”, it tells the story of the unsung heroines of North Northumberland’s fishing communities. The photograph shows women working at the Beadnell herring yard in around 1905 and is part of Katrina’s collection.
As well as the article about women in the fishing communities, there is also a contribution from Dr Paul Morrison about Coquet Island.
The Cheviot is a journal that celebrates the landscape, nature, history and culture of North Northumberland, including the coast from Cresswell to Berwick. Published three times a year it contains a variety of interesting and informative articles by local writers and artists.
Not only celebrating the coast, the current edition has articles about the Search and Rescue dogs, the Morpeth-born artist Joseph Crawhall and the hills around Windy Gyle. There is also a poem from local dialect poet, James Tait, as well as a painting by the artist Gordon Highmoor.
