The history of human interaction and occupation of the landscape is integral to the character of the Northumberland Coast AONB. The sea has always been the dominant force not only in how it has shaped the coastline but in how our ancestors have attempted to manipulate and exploit it. Evidence of this interaction ranges from field patterns to settlement sites, route ways to buildings and quarries to castles.

The cultural heritage of the Northumberland Coast AONB encompasses archaeology, built environment, landscapes, history and culture and falls broadly into four themes:

Ecclesiastical

Castles and defence

Fishing and farming

Industry and transport
