Northumberland Coast AONB has teamed up with Mudlarks Beach Schools, in an innovative Sustainable Development Fund pilot project to help support the provision of Beach Schools to local children.

Mudlarks are keen to support local schools in utilising the beach as a valuable learning resource. In this pilot project, children from two schools Shilbottle Primary and Hipsburn Primary will spend time on Northumberland AONB beaches exploring and understanding the natural world around them. Over the spring term the children will be taken onto the beach several times and will cover a wide range of topics including tides, rockpools, sea birds, estuaries, sand, vikings and of course local heroine Grace Darling. Northumberland AONB hopes that by encouraging children to experience and connect with the AONB this will help to create and inspire the coastline conservationists of the future. Bridie Melkerts from Mudlarks says "We're incredibly excited to be involved in this project to support local school children in learning about and enjoying the coastline on their doorstep. We're very lucky to live so close to this wonderful coast and it's our aim to ensure the children enjoy their outdoor experiences and have fun whilst learning all about the wildlife and nature in their local coastal environments".
