The Northumberland Coast AONB is a member of a family of protected landscapes across the UK.
AONBs are unique and irreplaceable national assets and along with National Parks represent our finest countryside.
Protected Landscapes Family
There are 38 AONBs in England and Wales, covering 16% of the land area. In terms of landscape quality, the AONBs are recognised as the equal of our 15 National Parks and are given the same level of protection.
The Northumberland Coast AONB is one of the smallest in the family but with a large resident population and lots of visitors, there is more pressure from development of housing and infrastructure than larger AONBs.
AONBs are cared for by dedicated management teams working in partnership with local organisations.
AONB Partnerships from across the country work together as the AONB Family, sharing experience, promoting good practice and fostering collaboration to ensure these special landscapes are cared for, now and in the future.
