We’re excited to share an important update about the future of Warkworth Dunes, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. In the coming weeks, fencing will be installed across parts of the dunes, this will allow cattle to return to graze the dunes next autumn. Dune grazing is part of a conservation project designed to improve the habitat for specialist wildlife and plant species that make this area so special.
Why fencing?
The fencing will allow cattle to graze the dunes in a controlled way. Grazing helps manage vegetation, preventing scrub from taking over and keeping the dunes healthy and diverse. This approach is widely used in nature conservation and is proven to benefit dune systems.
Will access be affected?
Absolutely not! We know how important access is for local people and visitors. Gates will be provided throughout the fenced areas so you can continue to enjoy walking, exploring, and appreciating the beauty of the dunes.
Thank you for supporting this work to protect and enhance our coastal landscape. Together, we’re helping nature thrive for generations to come.
Fencing contractors will be on site soon, please give them space to work safely.

What about my dog?
Obviously, people are concerned about cattle and dogs. We have therefore taken every precaution. We will use Highland Cattle which are placid and docile and that are used to people. The track to the west, the path to the south, the dune-ridge and the beach won’t be fenced and will be available as an alternative. We are only grazing 13 Hectares of dunes, so there is plenty more areas to take your dog.
When will the cattle arrive?
The cattle will arrive in late summer or early autumn and will stay for about three months.
Who will look after them?
The cattle will be checked daily by our Ranger or volunteers who will also top-up the water troughs.
